More model informationWinged caduceus of a statuette of Mercury. Two serpents with heads facing each other are wrapped around the staff. At the bottom there are two wings. Bronze; H 6,7 cm.
In ancient times, the caduceus was the identifying mark of heralds (preform of diplomats), which was supposed to signal the immunity of the bearer of military orders. In Roman iconography, it was often depicted being carried in the left hand of Mercury. The most famous caduceus bearer was the Greek god Hermes, who was called Mercury by the Romans.
