More model information

Main block from a Merlin engine. Parts have been cut away to show the internal workings. Most notably 60% of the cylinder banks are removed. Colours not applied to model.

The strong and reliable Merlin engine was fitted to many different Second World War aircraft including the Avro Lancaster, Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. It was developed and improved throughout the war. This engine block is from a Merlin ’60 series’. The engine works by burning air and fuel to move the pistons up and down. This movement drives a shaft that makes the propeller spin.

Museum number: STKMG:LH.misc.2014.MCH.1.1

Credits: “Interactive WW2 Gallery” project led by Jan Korenko (Senior Lecturer), dataset obtained by Tom Vine (Technical Specialist), Staffordshire University.
