The 180 ft USCG Cutter Mesquite was built in Duluth, MN in 1943. In December of 1989, while retrieving navigational buoys the Mesquite ran aground on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It could not be removed before winter and winter storms damaged the vessel beyond repair.. Because she was a total loss, the Coast Guard cooperated in the intentional sinking of the Mesquite as a dive site. The Mesquite is totally intact except for the pilot house which was removed and sits on the starboard side of the ship now. For years the Mesquite was the most popular dive site on Lake Superior. It is now part of the Keweenaw Underwater Preserve. The model was created from 2,191 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman on one forty minute DPV dive.
