Military hatchet model M.18893D Model
1889–1915, Austria-Hungary
Ignacy Łukasiewicz Regional Museum in Gorlice
The Austro-Hungarian hatchet – model M.1889 belonged to the standard equipment of pioneers, and sometimes sappers and medics also used it. This type of hatchet was often colloquially referred to as “Michałek.”
It was mainly used for chopping, and often for cutting fascines used to reinforce the walls of trenches. To a lesser extent, it was also used for earthwork in trenches, especially in light soil.
This type of edged weapon was gradually replaced during World War I by entrenching tools – spades.
The presented specimen is a steel destrukt found on the battlefield near Gorlice.
