More model informationStarting every May Day (running for several days) Minehead’s ‘Obby Oss’ dances through the town accompanied by musicians.
The origins of the Obby Oss (Hobby Horse) are unclear. Some say the English folk tradition is to do with fertility or frightening away evil spirits, others think sailors used the ceremony to scare off invading Danes. Locally the Oss is also known as the Sailor’s Horse so perhaps it celebrates trade and commerce.
