Mitochondria are spherical or tubular structures in the cells of almost all eukaryotes, particularly many mitochondria can be found in cells with high energy consumption (e. g. muscle cells, nerve cells, sensory cells and egg cells). Mitochondria regenerate the energy-rich molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP) via the respiratory chain.
