Skeleton of Moa nunui (South Island giant moa, Dinornis robustus) , an extinct species of bird from Aotearoa.
This individual is LB7111 from the Land Vertebrates collections at Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira. The bones of LB7111 have been individually scanned and assembled into a skeleton by Daniel Thomas from the School of Natural Sciences at Massey University. At the feet of LB7111 are bones for which their location in the skeleton hasn’t yet been found. If you spot any errors in how the skeleton has been assembled, or can see where some of the red bones should fit, then please let us know so we can update LB7111.
The artwork provided alongside LB7111 is ‘South Island giant moa | Moa nunui. Adult in scrubland (710 x 494 mm watercolour and watercolour pencil on paper). South Island. Image © Paul Martinson by Paul Martinson’. We thank Paul Martinson very much for giving permission to use this artwork.
