The tongue receives innervation from the chorda tympani of the facial nerve, the lingual nerve of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve and the hypoglossal nerve. It is important to understand the route of these nerves through the skull and soft tissues of the pharynx.
This model provides a summary of these nerves. The skull is non-transparent so that the relationships between the nerves and the skull foramina are clearer.
This model was created by Rona Roy in 2024 as part of her studies at the University of Edinburgh. The research project was supervised by Dr Stephen J Maclean, Lecturer in Anatomy, University of Edinburgh (s.j.maclean@ed.ac.uk; Staff Profile). The model was created using Blender.
This model forms part of a wider project under the Edinburgh ATLAS Facility, overseen by Dr Jennifer Paxton (staff profile) and Victoria McCulloch (staff profile).
