Model 68A - Bathochordaeus stygius larvaceanYour model is disabled. For more details go to Edit properties3D Model
This is an animation of a giant larvacean (Bathochordaeus stygius) found in Monterey Bay, CA, USA (lat 36.7015 long -122.0538) at a depth of 230 meters during an MBARI Midwater Ecology cruise in 2015. This reconstruction was completed by CG artist Robert Gutierrez in collaboration with Kakani Katija, Joost Daniels, Rob Sherlock, and others at the MBARI Bioinspiration lab (https://www.mbari.org/bioinspiration-lab/).
This species was described in a study published in the journal Nature which describes a unique laser-based system for constructing 3D models of diaphanous marine animals and the mucus structures they secrete. The 3DR model was created by using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Rachel Carson mounted to ROV MiniROV.
