An unusually large canoe model of a great lakes type canoe, sides covered with porcupine quill work in purple; yellow, green and white. ‘Manboards’ in ends represent spirit of the canoe, a common feature of Great Lakes canoe models. Floral and eagle, centrally placed, holding end of scroll in its beak on which are written the words, ‘Freedom Victorious.’;This model canoe is an excellent and beautiful example of the art of quill work. It is possible that it was made as a souvenir for the U.S. Centennial in 1876. There are comparable items in the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Historical Museum.;This model canoe was given to the family of Daniel C. Lamberton around 1880 by one of the sons of “Chief” Ignatius Petoskey in “appreciation of assistance rendered him in an illness.” W. F. Keeney acquired the canoe in about 1920 when the last member of Lamberton’s family, Helen M. Keeney, passed away.
