The amyloid beta peptide is a component of the amyloid precursor protein, which is normally bound to a cell membrane. The beta and gamma secretase enzymes cut out the free form, that aggregates to amyloid plaques. Amyloid plaques are strong related to Alzheimer’s disease. Source: PDB entry 2beg
