This monument to is found at St Mary’s Parish Church, Marketgate, Crail, Fife. It commemorates James Lumsden of Airdrie who died in 1598 aged 43. Airdrie House lies to the north-west of Crail, once a seat of the Lumsden family. Oldest of the memorials in the churchyard, the Lumsden arms appear beneath the pediment. A pair of monograms either side spell out ‘IAMES LVMSDEN’ on the left and ‘OF AIRDRIE’ on the right. Behind the pillars is a worn ‘Address to the Soul’ inscription. The Register of the Privy Council of Scotland twice records James having been ‘put to the horn’, or declared as a rebel. Initially he was charged (though restored to favour) with possessing a royal jewel. Later he was suspected in a plot against James VI.
