MOR-E 17 Pensive Christ

A wooden polychrome sculpture of Pensive Christ by an unknown author from Maków Podhalański is a unique work in the collection of the Orkan Museum in Rabka. The iconographic scheme is typical: the Savior sits thoughtful, distraught, with his head resting on his hand.

Immediately after World War II, Maków’s “Sorrowful Christ” embarked on an exhibition tour from Warsaw through Łódź, Sopot, Wrocław, Poznań, Paris, Brussels, Rapperswil, and Amsterdam, all the way to London. In 1948, during his stay in Wrocław, Pablo Picasso himself was reportedly captivated by it. Upon seeing the sculpture at an exhibition organized for the World Congress of Intellectuals for Peace, he said: “If another world war broke out and all sculptures, all works of man, except for Christ the Sorrowful, disappeared from the face of the earth…, this one sculpture could confidently attest to the genius of the human race.”
