The figure of Christ the Good Shepherd (18th–19th century), from the village of Dobra in Limanowa County, is both modest and powerful. Christ is depicted in a protective pose: standing frontally, carrying a sheep on his shoulders, which he gently holds with his right hand. This gesture, rooted in Christian symbolism of guidance and rescue, takes on a local, homely character. Christ holds a shepherd’s staff and—most strikingly—wears a highlander’s hat! This combination of a sacred motif with the attire characteristic of the local population transforms a universal story into an intimate, local cult. This sculpture was most likely part of a roadside shrine. Exploring such an object is a journey into the heart of Lesser Poland’s ethnography, where the boundary between the sacred and the everyday was fluid, and faith had the face of a shepherd – wearing a highlander hat.
