The sculpture depicting Our Lady of the Scapular is a typical example of Małopolska’s religious art, intended for roadside shrines or rural interiors. Its form is massive and static, typical of the work of self-taught artists. The key detail here is: the Infant Jesus and Mary hold small scapulars in their hands. In its original, monastic form, the scapular (from the Latin scapulae – back, shoulders) was part of the habit, a wide strip of cloth that fell over the shoulders and covered the breasts and back. It symbolized the yoke, the burden of life, but also the protection of the Mother of God. It consists of two pieces of woolen cloth connected by a string, worn around the neck under clothing. In this work, both Mary and the Infant Jesus present the scapular, holding it out in a gesture of offering and invitation. This gesture clearly states: grace and protection are available.
