More model informationMoschops capensis was a large herbivorous animal that lived in South Africa during the Middle Permian epoch, about 265 to 260 million years ago. It belonged to a group of synapsids called tapinocephalids, which had thick skulls and small brains. Moschops capensis had a massive body supported by short and sturdy legs, and a small head with chisel-like teeth for feeding on tough plants. It may have used its thick skull to head-butt other members of its species in contests for mates or territory. Moschops capensis was one of the largest land animals of its time, reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing up to 327 kilograms. It was probably preyed upon by large carnivorous therapsids, such as titanosuchids and therocephalians.
