More model information

The common mosquito (Culex pipiens) is one of the most widespread and recognizable insects. Measuring about 3-7mm, it has a slender, grayish-brown body covered in fine hairs. Its long, delicate legs end in tiny claws for clinging to surfaces, while its transparent wings allow for quick, darting flight. Mosquitoes have large, compound eyes for detecting movement and feathery antennae that help them sense carbon dioxide and body heat from potential hosts. Females are the ones that bite, using their needle-like proboscis to pierce the skin and draw blood, which provides essential nutrients for egg development. Males, in contrast, feed only on nectar. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, where larvae develop before emerging as adults. While mosquitoes play a role in ecosystems as pollinators and a food source for birds and fish, they are also notorious disease carriers, spreading malaria, dengue, and West Nile virus. Their persistence and adaptability make them one of the most resilient insects on Earth.
