More model informationIntroduced in 1979 by Motorola, the 68000 is a 16/32-bit CPU that was at the heart of hundreds of machines from home computers, videogame systems, arcade hardware, and a wide variety of embedded hardware from printers to traffic light controllers. Discontinued in 1996, but not forgotten.
The chip shown here was a pre-release version. I replaced the metal cap with a quartz window so you can see the CPU die inside the chip package. The gold bond wires connecting the CPU die to the pin pads are not accurate, as I was unable to find pictures or schematics to work with.
