Motte: LH004-023001 Ecclesiastical Enclosure: LH004-097001

Coords: 54.05224 -6.38603

Map: http://binged.it/1Jm6S1Y

Situated on the summit of Faughart Hill on a ridge overlooking the countryside NE of Faughart church and graveyard, the Motte consists of a large mound (H c. 8m, diam. at base c. 38m, at summit c. 15.6m) surrounded by a circular fosse ditch, (W 5-6m, D c. 1.5m). The fosse is almost flat-bottomed and has its outer face lined in places with drystone walling. The mound has been badly eroded in places by cattle climbing up its face (poaching) exposing undisturbed boulder clay in the lower portion with a large amount of greywacke in the upper layers mixed with clay. The remains of a walled structure can be found on top and mound and has been quarried away exposing the construction in section a stone wall built with large boulders mortared together. According to Wright (1758), Lord Mountjoy in the reign of Elizabeth I camped here several times during the Tyrone rebellion.
