Muchalls Castle, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire3D Model
Muchalls Castle, north of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, combines the strength of a Scottish tower house with the elegance of a Renaissance mansion. Its present form largely dates from rebuilding by the Burnett family between 1619 and 1627, incorporating an earlier stronghold associated with the Frasers.
The three-storey, L-plan building has harled walls, slate roofs and vaulted ground-floor rooms. Its wings enclose three sides of a courtyard, with a wall completing the western side. Inside, decorative plaster ceilings and heraldic overmantels reflect the wealth and status of its owners, bringing elaborate craftsmanship into a fortified setting.
The roofline was altered during the 19th century, adding another layer to the castle’s architectural history. Surviving estate buildings and the surrounding designed landscape place it within a wider country-house setting. Listed at Category A in 1972, Muchalls is recognised for its outstanding architectural and historic interest.
