Mesa Verde was occupied for thousands of years, but the time of great sheltered Pueblos like these ended here in about 1250 AD. Years of drought and scarce resources made these impossible to defend, so these people moved to Arizona to become the Pueblo people. They had moved up here from populated low lands by Cortez for protection in the first place. Before that they lived near Aztec, and Chaco Canyon and this turned out to be a temporary solution too. Even the rulers went hungry when the crops failed or when every pueblo and home is attacked by roving gangs on a regular basis. It was not safe to even be in the fields to try and grow anything. Many security towers were destroyed and rebuilt many times in some of these places. The human conflicts and migrations were triggered the by kind of changes in climate that we see now along the Colorado River in the South West US.
