Development of root begins after the enamel and dentin formation has reached the future cementoenamel junction

Epithelial cells of the inner and outer dental epithelium proliferate from the cervical loop of the dental organ to form : - root sheath of hertwig - epithelial diaphragm

The plane of the diaphragm remains relatively fixed during the development & growth of the root ‘’fixed plane’‘. And the proliferation occuring coronal to the diaphragm ‘’coronal proliferation’‘.

Multiroots : starts as single diaphragm then form horizontal shelves 2 or 3 which fuse & gives the multi roots.
