Mummy Portrait 1 Of A Woman Model 1 3D Model
Artist/Maker: Attributed to Malibu Painter (Romano-Egyptian, active 75 - 100)
Place: Egypt (Place created)
Date: A.D. 75–100
Medium: Encaustic wax technique on lime wood panel
Object Number: 73.AP.91
Dimensions: 40 × 20 × 0.2 cm (15 3/4 × 7 7/8 × 1/16 in.)
This portrait of a woman presents many of the distinctive qualities characteristic of Romano-Egyptian funerary panels. The style of her dark, curly hair, bound up into a loose bun at the top of the head, was in fashion during the Flavian period (AD 68-96) and helps to date the portrait to the years around that time.
Although the find spot is unknown, the general style of the portrait and the curved top of the panel corresponds with others found by Flinders Petrie at the site of Hawara in the Egyptian Fayum region.
Provenance: Orient-Occident (Paris, France), sold to the J. Paul Getty Museum, 1973.
