Music box mechanism modeled for a Hard Surface Modeling class. This was one of my first 3D models and I recently re-made the textures for it using substance painter.
This music box was a serious learning experience for me. I had very little reference for a lot of the pieces and I basically had to reverse engineer some sections based on a youtube video I found which explained how a music box actually works. This model is fully accurate/functional and it does play the song Swan Lake.
Fun fact: to make it accurately play the song Swan Lake, I found a youtube video which showed a mechanism like this one playing that song, then paused it at every second or two and drew out a “map” of where each notch would go when the drum was just a flat 2D rectangle, instead of a 3D cylinder. I then used that drawing as an image plane and extruded the notches wherever the drawing showed one. It was very tedious, but the effect turned out very nice and it was definitely worth the effort.
