Narcissus is a genus of bulbous perennial plants in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. They have a short bloom window in early spring. Therefore, the flower model acts as a stand-in that allows people to take a closer look at the anatomy of a daffodil flower at any time of year.
While daffodils are inedible because they have toxic components, they also have certain medicinal properties that have been extracted and used in various treatments for millennia. Today, galantamine—a biologically active compound within the plant—is used to slow the progression of symptoms related to Alzheimer’s Disease.
