Our naval signaller waits with rolled flags to pass messages with semaphore. Semaphore is a code in which each letter or phrase of the message is formed by the signaller holding flags, and his arms, and in a specific arrangements. The sequence of the various positions spells out a unique message.

Huddled against the North Sea cold in his hooded duffel coat and sea boots, he is a vital link between ships at sea as he passes messages from one ship to another using signals generated by handheld yellow-and-red flags.

Tradition dies hard in the navies of Britain and the Empire so, despite the availability of wireless technology, the RN still practised passing messages from ship to ship or from ship to shore using hand-held flags during the Great War.
