More model informationThis model depicts a quarried outcrop of fine grained Silcrete, a type of stone utilised by early Maori settlers of New Zealand for the production of large blade tools. Blades made from this material are thought to have been used to butcher large game, such as Moa and fur seals. Silcrete blades are found in many of the earliest coastal sites in southern New Zealand, indicating that early settlers began exploring the interior landscape almost immediately after arrival. Dr Tim Thomas, and students from the Archaeology Programme of the University of Otago excavated the Nenthorn silcrete quarry site in February 2015.
