Newly discovered carved stone ball - fundraiser for Perth Museum & Art Gallery

Carved stone balls date to the late Neolithic period of around 3200 – 2500 BC. Their discoveries are almost exclusively associated with Scotland, where around 520 are known to have been found, with only a handful in total known from the north of England, Ireland and Norway. Their purpose is not fully understood, but they are likely to have been symbol of status and may have been weapons. This newly discovered ball from Sheriffmuir is an exceptionally fine example and one of less than 50 that has been decorated.
