A probable early Neolithic polished flint axe found in Beaumont Park, Huddersfield in 2007 by John Ross and Peter Barratt whilst carrying out tree planting.
The axe measures 15.9cm in length and tapers in width from 3.9cm to 6.1cm at the cutting edge. The source of the flint is unclear, although it’s thought most likely to be from East Yorkshire (80-90 miles east) where similar axes have been found. It is believed the polished finish and lack of damage suggests this is a ceremonial piece and deliberate deposition.
Recorded on the Historic Environment Record for West Yorkshire as reference PRN 7769 and logged with the Portable Antiquities Scheme
