Nero ruled the Roman Empire from 54-68CE. This head of Nero was found at Ancient Corinth, Greece, and dates to the mid-first century CE (probably between 50-54 CE). In 146 BCE, Corinth was destroyed by Roman forces, but it was reestablished as a freedmen and veteran colony by Julius Caesar in 44 BCE.
Nero’s head was originally part of a full-body statue located in the Julian Basilica, which was constructed by Romans in the first century CE.
Nero’s toga appears a maroon-purple in keeping with models like Bernard Frischer’s Caligula and with restorations like the Ara Pacis. His hair comes from writers like Suetonius who detail his appearance. His skin comes from contemporary and later Roman mosaics, reliefs, and statues as well as their recolorations. His eyes are also informed by Suetonius, and his lips mimic the restored Caligula.
