Netherton Cross, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
A 2.1 metre tall freestanding sandstone cross of the ‘Govan’ school of carving of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. The carving of this cross is considered a somewhat crude example in style and execution suggesting it is relatively late in the tradition, maybe late 10th or early 11th century. The cross has decoration on all four sides with panels of interlace and geometric patterns along with people, people with beasts heads and animals. The cross originally stood in Hamilton Low Parks until 1921 and it arrived in its present location outside Hamilton Parish Church in 1926. There are hopes that it could be moved undercover to protected it from the weather and preserve it better for future generations.
