New Church (LI032-024001-) Door Lough Gur

Church ruins standing on the southern shoreline of Lough Gur, Co. Limerick, known as the ‘New Church’, built in the late 15th/16th century as a chapel of ease, for the Earl of Desmonds residing in the medieval castle (LI032-022034-) located 1.1km to the north-north-east. The church was entered through this two-centred pointed limestone doorway located at the western end of the south wall. A flat-headed wall-cupboard is visible directly inside the doorway on the eastern side. The interior of the wall-cupboard has a well preserved plastered surface with traces of red paint of uncertain date. The church stands in the north-west quadrant of a rectangular-shaped graveyard (LI032-024002-) which is still used today as a burial ground for local people. The church was restored in the early 1900s when the walls were repointed and a glazed plaque of the Madonna and Child was inserted above the doorway.
