The 205 ft schooner barge Noque Bay was built in 1872 and was nearly identical to its sister ships Prestio (1869) and Mautenee (1873). It was built to haul lumber from Lake Superior ports like Ashland and Duluth to Buffalo then coal on the return trip. On October 6, 1905 she was being towed by the steambarge Lizzie Madden along with her sister ship Mautenee from Bayfield with a load of hemlock lumber when fire was discovered near the donkey boiler but discovered too late to stop the destruction of the ship. The Lizzie Madden towed the Noquebay to the shallow water of Julian Bay. The crew worked to save the cargo but the ship burned to the waterline. Today it lies in 12 ft of water in Julian Bay, Stockton Island of the Apostle Islands. At the time the site was photographed for the model it was almost totally buried in sand attesting to the variable conditions of the site. The model was created from 1,088 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman on one DPV dive.
