The Normandy class was designed to assist in the successful landing of troops on a planet’s surface and to provide long rang fire support for troops on the ground. Armed with eight Medium Ray Cannons, all on the underbelly, that could vary their yield from less than 200lbs to 1.7 Gigatons of TNT. Every facet of the ship was designed for orbital support, the shape of the hull, the location of the weapons and shield projectors to the heavy armor plating that protected the engines from surface fire. Each ship was capable of housing 12,000 troops and could use orbital drop pods to land them and their support vehicles. While the ship possessed more than enough firepower to subjugate a planet it was severely lacking when it came to ship to ship combat. The two Ray Cannons on the top deck were capable of 22 Gigatons of yield but most shields of the era could handle much more. Nevertheless the ship saw great success in its lifetime and while several were lost in outside combat, none were ever shot down from orbit.
