Noss Sound Broch, Bressay (island of), Shetland Isles, Scotland.
This broch survives as a rubble mound with two outer defensive banks. It is situated on low ground by the sea, looking across the 220m wide Sound of Noss to the Isle of Noss. Some small sections of wall can be traced across the turf and at points where erosion has exposed them, but nothing really substantial survives indicating most of the good stone has likely been reused in later structures in the surrounding landscape. In the top of the mound there are relatively recent rectangular structures.
Broch’s date to the Iron Age and were built sometime around 500BC - 200AD, The broch was a tower which people lived in, often they had long continuity of use and were modified into simpler structures as they fell into disrepair.
