This first draft was created in collaboration with the Marovany Association, Madagascar, as part of the Rising from the Depths project.
Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo was a Portuguese Royal Navy warship launched in Salvador de Bahir, Brasil, in 1760. Few archival records seem to survive for this vessel, though the stated mission was to deliver a cargo of large guns to the Portuguese colony at Goa, India. The ship was wrecked after striking the reef at Salary Bay, Madagascar on August 7th, 1774, in fine weather and remarkbaly similar circumstances to the other wrecks in the vicinity.
This rapidly published model is composed of 6,000+ images covering a 2,500 m2 area, documenting the principal assemblage of the wreck. The debris field extends for over 900 m north-east. The main site consists of 62 cannons between 2-3 m in length, with the central group likely to represent the guns being transported to Goa. Numerous cannon balls can be seen around this main group.
