Emergency money in Lower Austria was issued during economic crises, especially after the First World War. It served as a substitute for the lack of official currency. Municipalities, companies and banks issued it in the form of bills or coins. The bills were often artistically designed and had regional motifs. Emergency money was usually only valid locally and lost its significance with the stabilization of the currency.
