Ce modèle 3D illustre le principe des courbes de niveaux ou isohypses.

En cartographie, une isohypse est une courbe dont l’altitude est la même en tout point. On peut visualiser des plans qui viennent trancher le relief horizontalement, laissant ainsi leurs empreintes sous forme de courbes noires d’altitude constante. Le tracé de ces courbes permet donc de rendre compte du relief sur une carte en 2 dimensions.

L’écart entre ces courbes de niveau est régulier (ici 100 mètres), on appelle cela l’équidistance des isohypses.
