“Also called Seungui (僧衣) or Beopui (法衣), this garment is a traditional Buddhist robe. Originally, the Buddha established the gasa (袈裟) as the fundamental attire for monks. In India, monks wore the gasa as everyday clothing throughout all seasons. However, when it was introduced to China, differences in climate and clothing customs led to the practice of wearing it over an upper garment called pyeonsam (偏衫, 褊衫).”
