Dusisiren is a member of the order Sirenia, which includes modern manatees and dugongs. With the exception of one member, nearly all sirenians are restricted to warm waters. Unlike whales that have blubber, these large marine mammals have only a thin layer af fat over their bodies. Most of their lives are spent in warm, shallow water eating sea weed. Their large, flat teeth help them grind up their food. The few cusps on the teeth of Dusisiren are intermediate between the extremely simple teeth of modern dugongs and the complex teeth of their land-dwelling ancestors. This fossil was discovered in the Miocene Monterey formation during the original development of the city of Aliso Viejo. The fossil was scanned with an Artec Eva.
