Octopus 3D Model
Bronze, about 1550–1600, probably North Italy. Museum no. A.10-1955
When acquired in the 1950s, the small octopus was identified by the Natural History Museum as similar to one found in the Mediterranean. The tentacles and the web-like connection between them are particularly life-like, but the head is more freely modelled. It has been given a human appearance by moving the eyes above the nose and mouth. This comical treatment would have appealed to a humanist scholar on whose desk it was probably used as a paperweight.
