Anomalocaris, known as the “strange shrimp,” was a prehistoric marine predator from the Cambrian Period, thriving around 541 to 485 million years ago. This peculiar creature is significant as one of the largest animals of its time, reaching up to a meter in length. Anomalocaris is recognized by its unique features: a pair of large, stalked, compound eyes that granted it excellent vision, and a mouth shaped like a circular saw with serrated prongs.
Its body was segmented and flexible, with lobed fins aiding in navigation through the Cambrian seas. The most striking characteristics were its frontal appendages, resembling flexible arms with spiny barbs, which it used to capture prey such as trilobites.
