The Odesa Catacombs, particularly those showcased in the “Secrets of Underground Odesa” museum, were formed as a result of limestone (shell rock) extraction, which was used for the city’s construction. Their age is approximately 200 years, as active quarrying began in the 19th century. The stone was primarily extracted by local workers, and the quarries gradually transformed into a complex network of tunnels, which later became hiding places for smugglers, revolutionaries, and partisans.
*The model was digitized in the course of the project “Ukrainian Heritage Digitization and Dissemination Initiative,” supported by the US Embassy in Ukraine (Kyiv) and the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. It is a joint ownership of the “Secrets of Underground Odesa” museum, non-profit organization “CyArk” and NGO “Scientific Research Lab “Archaic”. *
