More model informationUpper part of a Anglo-Scandinavian cross shaft. The front side of the cross shaft is divided into panels with interlace and showing man with cap, and flared smock with a bird on each shoulder. This may be Odin and his ravens. Odin was the greatest Norse God, the ravens told him the news of the world. Another interpretation is that the birds are doves and the man a portrait, presumably of the deceased. This is a very accomplished carving, one of the best of the school of Brompton in North Yorkshire. The cross is made with a fine-grained, well sorted, micaceous light yellowish brown deltaic sandstone with sub-rounded grains. This is probably a County Durham source. Dated to the first half of the 10th century.
