Description: Roman sources mention the use of hide boats in Irish waters as early as the 6th century BC. Then the hide cover was pulled over a framework woven from withies. Recently withies were replaced by laths and hides by calico. Such boats can be found on the western coast of Ireland. The boat from Donegal, built in 1980, represents the smallest, one- or two-person version, which inhabitants of the north-western region use in fishery and transportation on the offshore Atlantic waters. It can be propelled with a paddle by a single paddler kneeling on the prow. Sometimes he was assisted by a rear paddler or used two oars on tholepins. Inverted light boat is carried on one’s shoulders.
