Description: Dongting Hu Lake is the second as to size in China and lies on the Middle Yangtze. The tradition of dragon boat ricing was to be initiated on it. Fishermen fish there from flat-bottomed boats called sampans. Planks of their sides are joined with nails the caravel style and a hull is strengthened by 7 traditional transoms. The propulsion was provided by two two-piece oars hanged up from tall tholepins or a lugsail. This sampan built in the 1960s was a year-long home for its owner and his son, who lived in a little cabin. They fished with a large lift net, suspended from 10 metres long bamboo rods. They were parts of a wooden windlass thought to be a Chinese invention.
