Description: Coastal dwellers of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, famous for its limestone rocks, build their boats in the shape of an elongated basket. A bamboo mat forming the hull is light, very tough, flexible, deformation resistant and cheap. It is sealed with mixture of buffalo dung, coconut oil, lime and resin. They are used in fishery or as water shops. It is believed that basket boats were invented by a Vietnamese serviceman in 10th century. Our boat, built in the 1970s, proved to be exceptionally seaworthy. The crew of three escaped on it from the communist Vietnam to Hong Kong negotiating the 600 miles route. Their sea journey lasted over 20 days.
