Ogden Water, Calderdale - Roman Road Detail 3D Model
The model displays the half-sectioned road surface at the end of the community excavation within the woodlands at Ogden Water, undertaken between the 11th and 24th June.
The road surface consisted of a single layer of rounded gritstone boulders laid upon a series of silty sand deposits interpreted as representing natural hill-washed material. No other constructed horizons relating to the road were identified. At the base of the trench the natural subsoil consisted of compact silty clay with inclusions of degraded sandstone.
A charcoal rich deposit immediately beneath the road was samples for the purpose of radiocarbon dating. Soil samples were also obtained in order to undertaken pollen analysis.
