Ogden Water, Calderdale - Roman Road Excavation3D ModelNoAI
Between the 11th and 24th June, Pennine Prospects led a community excavation of the Roman Road site within an area of woodland located at the Yorkshire Water property of Ogden Water, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The road is understood to represent the Manchester to Ilkley Roman Road (WYAAS PRN No: 557 / Margary No: 270a) which included the aboveground road surface visible at Blackstone Edge near Rochdale.
The model displays the final phase of the excavation, detailing the half-sectioned remains of the road, as well as the sandy colluvial (hill-wash) deposits beneath. If the road surface (constructed of a layer of rounded gritstone boulders is Roman, it is not traditional in its construction. Reporting and analysis is on-going.
In addition numerous post-medieval field drains are depicted.
Many thanks to Courtenay Crichton-Turley of Heeley City Farm for undertaking the survey.
