Ogham Inscription, Dunadd Fort3D ModelNoAI
This inscription is at the summit of Dunadd Fort in the ogham alphabet.
The upper line begins AESD- but is too worn to read much more. The lower line reads FIRRMONAI, perhaps for Early Gaelic Fir Monai ‘the men of Moine’. The meaning is unclear but presumably relates to the king-making ritual which took place at Dunadd.
Over 40 ogham inscriptions survive in Scotland, ranging in date from the 5th century to the 10th. The ogham alphabet was invented in Ireland by the 4th century for writing short messages on wood, and later stone. It is hard to date the Dunadd inscription but it most likely dates to the 7th-9th century.
Dunadd Fort is an early medieval hillfort located on a small hill by the River Add in Kilmartin Glen.
